What is the route from Marrakech to the Agafay desert?

The route follows the Guemassa road (R203) for 24 paved kilometres, then a marked track for 6 kilometres. The drive takes 45 minutes from Guéliz. There is no toll, no pass and no fuel station after kilometre 18.

Leave Marrakech on avenue Mohammed VI, then take the Guemassa road at the Agdal roundabout. The road is sound for the first 24 kilometres: two lanes, fresh surface as far as the village of Ain Itti, patchier after that.

The track starts past the camp signboard. It is stony, sometimes rutted after a storm, and crosses two dry wadis. Drive at 25 km/h: punctures on this section almost always come from carrying too much speed over the flat stones.

  • Filling up in Marrakech: the last station sits at kilometre 18.
  • Leaving Guéliz before 4 pm to arrive ahead of the late light.
  • Following the camp signs rather than GPS for the final 6 kilometres.
  • Allowing 15 minutes more on the way back, since the track drives slower at night.

Which vehicle should you take to Agafay from Marrakech?

A 4×4 or SUV with over 180 mm of ground clearance is required for Agafay. A saloon covers the 24 paved kilometres but grounds on the track. Our 4×4s start at 1,200 MAD per day, with the Agafay track included in the contract.

The track demands no off-road skill. It demands ground clearance and sound tyres. That is why we decline to rent a saloon to a customer who mentions Agafay: the risk is to the sump and the wheels, not to the driving.

The Range Rover Sport and the Defender are the two vehicles we send on this route most often. Both cross the dry wadis without dropping below 20 km/h.

What is there to see and do in the Agafay desert?

Agafay is a stone desert, not a sand one. People come for three things: sunset over the hills, dinner in a camp, and the view of the snow-covered Atlas from December to March. Lake Lalla Takerkoust is 20 minutes away.

The contrast makes the place. Thirty kilometres from a city of a million people, the horizon turns mineral and the silence is total. The Atlas range closes the view to the south, 40 kilometres off, and stays white until March.

Most camps open their restaurant to passing visitors by reservation. Lake Lalla Takerkoust, 20 minutes away by track and road, extends the day before you return on the R203.

  • Watching sunset from the ridges, 40 minutes before the official hour.
  • Dining at a camp, booked the day before.
  • Driving on to Lake Lalla Takerkoust, 20 minutes to the south-west.
  • Photographing the snow-covered Atlas from the hills, between December and March.

When should you go to Agafay and what should you bring?

The best window runs from October to April, when temperatures peak at 25 °C. In July and August they reach 45 °C at midday and the trip is only worth making after 5 pm. Bring 3 litres of water per person and a warm layer.

The temperature swing surprises people. A day at 28 °C ends at 11 °C once the sun drops, because no vegetation holds the heat. A jumper is enough, but it is essential.

Mobile coverage is patchy on the track and absent in some dips. Download your offline map before leaving Marrakech.

  • Carrying 3 litres of water per person, with no water point on site.
  • Packing a warm layer: 17 °C between afternoon and night.
  • Downloading the offline map, since coverage drops on the track.
  • Checking tyre pressures before leaving Marrakech.

Frequently asked questions about the Agafay desert from Marrakech

Four questions come up before every Agafay trip: whether a saloon can make it, how long to allow, whether there is sand, and driving the track after dark.

Can you reach Agafay in a normal car?

No, not as far as the camps. A saloon covers the 24 paved kilometres without trouble, then grounds on the stony track of the final 6 kilometres. The risk is to the sump and the wheels. A 4×4 or SUV is required.

How long should you allow for Agafay?

Allow 5 hours in total: 45 minutes out, 3 hours on site and 1 hour back after dark. Leaving at 4 pm lets you catch sunset and return to Marrakech around 9 pm.

Are there sand dunes at Agafay?

No. Agafay is a desert of stone and clay, made of bare hills. The nearest sand dunes are at Merzouga, 560 kilometres away — 8 hours of driving via Ouarzazate and Errachidia.

Can you drive the Agafay track at night?

Yes, and most visitors do on the way back from dinner. Drive at 20 km/h on full beam and follow the existing tracks. Our vehicles are insured on this track, by day and by night.
